Kickstart your Skilled Trades Future

When Edge Factor partners with schools, community and workforce leaders, and companies to host virtual events, we walk through all of the different types of media, activities, and live or pre-recorded options for Keynote presentations. Event hosts meet with the Edge Factor team to share their objectives and choose which tools they want to include in their event. Each event is unique - but every event has the same heart behind it: together, we want to inspire and engage community members like students, parents, families, and job-seekers to discover the training and career pathways!

On May 11, 2022, 7 Northern Ontario School Boards partnered with Edge Factor to equip students to discover the skilled trades with a virtual career exploration event, called Kickstart your Skilled Trades Future!

The key features of this virtual event included: Planning Guides for educators, students, families, and presenters, pre and post-event surveys and feedback forms, Company Profiles, playlists of career exploration media from the Edge Factor library, a pre-recorded skilled trades Keynote presentation featuring Jeremy Bout (Founder of Edge Factor), morning, afternoon and evening Keynote presentations and live workshop sessions over Zoom, where attendees learned about the High School Skilled Trades and Technology Pathways, Practical Steps to becoming an Apprentice, an Apprenticeship Speaker Panel, and more.

Here’s what some of the students had to say about this event:

“Three things I learned from the keynote presentation included that it’s good to try new things, OYAP is awesome, and the skilled trades would make an awesome career!”

“I learned about different careers, new skills, and new interests. I like that I can go back and watch the presentations on my own time.”

“The explanation throughout everything gave a clear understanding, I learned that you can get paid to learn. This event made me think about an apprenticeship.”

Educators took the time to share their feedback with us as well:

“I think the students who are looking into the trades see young people close to their age, and with this, they realize there are OPTIONS. I love it when students ask me for more information after the presentation, and I can see the excitement in their eyes!! We are so lucky to get to offer this program throughout the year.”

“My students shared how this event showed them the trades are great for all learners and there are valuable skills to be learned, whether you decide to peruse a career in the trades or not. Also, that other compulsory courses (math and science) are just as important.”

The following four playlists included Edge Factor media that focused on the four sectors within the skilled trades and specifically featured women and Indigenous community members as video hosts:

  1. Construction playlist
  2. Industrial playlist
  3. Motive Power playlist
  4. Service playlist
  5. Bonus: Information Technology playlist

We had 134 educators, 2451 students, 1095 female students, and 625 self identified Indigenous people register for the event!

Check out this event! You can watch the recorded Zoom presentations and Edge Factor’s media and tools from now until June 30, 2022.

Thank you to each of the 7 School Boards that made this event possible!
