Job interviews can be intimidating, especially for students applying for their first job. From what to wear to how to answer questions, there's much to consider. But with the right preparation, students can build the skills and confidence they need to make a great first impression.
Most students haven’t been taught how to navigate an interview. They might have the experience or enthusiasm, but lack the tools to present themselves professionally. Educators and homeschool parents play a vital role in helping students learn these skills before they ever step through a hiring manager’s door.
Why Preparation Matters
Landing a job isn’t just about a great resume—it’s about showing up prepared, present, and professional. These five tips, drawn from Edge Factor’s Interview 101 course, give students the insight they need to succeed at every stage of the interview process.
Here are five essential tips to help students ace their next job interview:
1. Clean Up Your Online Presence
Employers often check social media before or after an interview. A strong digital presence can work in your favor, but an unprofessional one can do the opposite.
- Review your social profiles and remove anything that could raise concern.
- Create or update your LinkedIn profile to reflect relevant skills and interests.
- Share or post content that shows you’re engaged in your field.
2. Dress the Part
What you wear communicates your attitude. Dress in clean, professional clothing that aligns with the tone of the company or role.
- Choose simple, neutral-colored outfits that look sharp and neat.
- Avoid clothing that’s overly flashy or too casual.
- Make sure your clothes are wrinkle-free and fit well.
3. Practice Interview Etiquette
Professionalism is about more than what you say—it's how you behave.
- Arrive early and silence your phone before the interview begins.
- Avoid chewing gum, interrupting, or appearing distracted.
- Prepare questions to ask the interviewer that show you're invested in the role.
4. Prepare for Common Questions
Even the most confident candidates benefit from practice.
- Rehearse answers to questions like, “Tell me about yourself,” or “Why should we hire you?”
- Focus on past examples that show how your skills apply to the job.
- Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure clear, relevant answers.
What Is the STAR Method?
The STAR method is a simple, structured way for students to answer common interview questions, especially those that ask for examples of past behavior. It helps them stay focused and show real-life application of their skills.
S – Situation
Describe the context or background of a specific event. What was happening?
T – Task
Explain the challenge or responsibility you faced.
A – Action
Talk about what you did to address the challenge or complete the task. Be specific.
R – Result
Share the outcome. What happened? What did you learn or achieve?
5. Master Non-Verbal Communication
Body language can reinforce—or undermine—your message.
- Maintain appropriate eye contact without staring.
- Use relaxed posture, positive facial expressions, and controlled gestures.
- Avoid nervous habits like fidgeting, slouching, or crossing your arms.
“Non-verbal communication can be more powerful than what you say out loud.”
—Mateo Beltran Interview 101, Episode 07
