The Chamber of Commerce Brantford Brant is hosting an event to empower their community with tools to inspire young people to explore careers in the skilled trades.

On Tuesday, May 16, 2023, the Chamber of Commerce Brantford Brant is hosting a conference titled, “How to Attract and Retain Young People to the Skilled Trades”. This event is sponsored by Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board (BHNCDSB), Grand Erie District School Board (GEDSB), and Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP).

The Chamber serves the community by enabling leaders from the private and public sectors to come together and find innovative solutions to drive the growth while demonstrating care and integrity in all of its endeavors.

Edge Factor’s Community team members and our Vice President are delighted to be attending this event! If you’re attending, we invite you to join us at the Edge Factor booth where we’ll be sharing career and workforce development tools you can tap into, to inspire the next generation on their career exploration journey. We’ll be specifically highlighting tech careers and skilled trades-related inspirational stories, media, and activities that make complex technical concepts easy to understand and applicable to the real world, and engaging soft skills content!

Come to learn more, ask questions, and explore how you can use these multimedia tools in classrooms, as send-home and individual class work, and at events!

The event features Dr. Jon Callegher as the keynote speaker. He is the leader of Job Talks, a company that studies skilled trades workers. He's interviewed over 150 young people who work in skilled trades and asked thousands of workers about their careers. He's overseen more than $1.2 million in partnership research projects. He's been invited to share his research and suggestions on CBC radio, Global National, Cityline, and at events across Canada and the U.S. Since January 2021, he's given over 200 talks both in-person and virtually to different groups like industry associations, school boards, and parent councils. Dr. Jon is also a full-time professor at George Brown College in Toronto. He has a PH.D. in sociology from the University of Waterloo.

“The Chamber is pleased to support and coordinate this event with our education partners. It is essential that business contributes to the development of its future labor force, and events like this are part of that solution. We look forward to seeing you there!” CEO, Secretary to the Board, Chamber of Commerce Brantford Brant

Technical Education teachers help students explore and prepare for careers in the skilled trades. They use a variety of teaching methods to help students learn and develop skills related to a specific occupation or career field while demonstrating techniques, and tools used in a particular career or industry.

Tech Ed teachers play a key role in supporting the Special High Skills Major (SHSM) program,  where students focus their learning on a specific economic sector as they gain sector-specific skills.  These students can continue their journey into the skilled trades through the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Programs (OYAP) where students earn an income, and learn from a certified mentor in the trades.

Edge Factor’s smart platform provides story-driven tools that technical educators use to inspire their students to explore, prepare, and connect on their career journey. Together with schools, companies, and service providers, Edge Factor empowers learners of all ages to discover careers and get connected to real-world opportunities.
