Edge Factor offers a Summer Camp Toolkit

The end of a school year provides students with the opportunity to celebrate their academic accomplishments and marks the beginning of summer vacation! For many students' summer vacations include adventure, sunshine, and summer camps!

The afternoon swims, the late night s’mores, the new friendships that begin at the craft table… There’s nothing quite like being a kid at Summer Camp. Many in-person activities and camps are being held this summer, as well as virtual camps. Camp Counselors, parents and families, and Summer School educators are looking for fun and educational resources to engage their students - and Edge Factor has a free toolkit they can embed into their summer programming and with their own kids at home!

Edge Factor is providing a fun and engaging Summer Camp Toolkit that includes STEAM-based (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) challenges and career exploration tools! There are two age-appropriate versions of the toolkit - one for grade 5-8 students and one for grades 9-10+ students. Both toolkits are created in partnership with National Electrical Manufacturers’ Association, Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters, National Tooling and Machining Association, Skills Ontario , ABB Motors & Mechanical Inc., and National Coalition of Advanced Technology Centers.

“The Summer Camp Toolkit includes some of the elements and benefits of a traditional summer camp, including the opportunities to experience success, build confidence, self-esteem and resilience while working on the daily challenges,” said Carolyn Davis, E-Learning Coordinator at Edge Factor.

Furthermore, students will discover how Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) comes alive through their own creativity and playtime and in real world careers. The summer camp toolkit includes 5 days of STEAM challenges that align with high impact career exploration media and includes a chance for students to enter to win prizes!

The two versions of the Summer Camps toolkit include:

    1. The  Junior Summer Camp toolkit for young learners includes a short keynote presentation each day related to an area of STEAM, which will present the challenge. The challenges introduce students to careers and related content to inspire their career exploration journey.  By submitting a form and a picture or video of them completing the challenge they are entered into a chance to win an Amazon Gift Card.

The challenges included in this toolkit vary from building a campsite with toothpicks and marshmallows, making ice cream, building paper airplanes, creating a binary code bracelet, and designing their own tour bus using sidewalk chalk. These challenges align with Edge Factor’s career exploration videos in various industries from Automation, Architecture & Construction, Graphic Arts and Hospitality.

The content made accessible in this toolkit includes the Explorers series where students explore careers across diverse industries as they discover how Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math come alive in the real world!  Students can also navigate career options as they watch industry leaders share an overview of their careers and describe the tools, equipment, processes, STEAM, and Soft Skills they use on the job. The Navigators series is a dynamic career exploration tool that also includes downloadable lesson plans for educators and assignable pre and post activities for students.

   2. The Senior Summer Camp toolkit for high school students in grades 9- 10 + includes a pre-recorded keynote by President & Founder of Edge Factor, Jeremy Bout. This keynote encourages students to try something new, rise to meet challenges, and embrace an attitude of lifelong learning.

High school students will be able to take a virtual field trip in real world companies too! Edge Factor has gone behind closed doors in companies across North America to film Virtual Workplace Experiences that showcase a walk and talk tour. Each episode is filmed at a company and gives learners an inside look at what it's like to work in different industries. Students can also dig deeper as they explore what a "day in the life" looks like in diverse careers and job roles. They will discover careers, and the typical responsibilities, tools, and equipment used in specific job roles.

Educators can use the Summer Camp Toolkit in class as a fun activity to wrap up the school year, or include it in the student or parent newsletter as activities they can access during the summer. Camp counsellors can integrate the activities and videos into their summer camp programs, and families can use the toolkit with their students at home this summer. Students can enter their Challenge Submission for chances to WIN a $25 Amazon Gift Card!

Here’s a brief list of what’s included in the Summer Camp toolkit:
