Renewing Roots: Kristy Corbiere's career story

Kristy Corbiere's story, as told by Edge Factor in the Launch Point episode Renewing Roots, is a testament to resilience, cultural reclamation, and the power of community. As an Ojibwe woman from Ching First Nation, Kristy’s journey is one of rediscovering her heritage, embracing her identity, and using her skills to uplift her community.

Early Life and Cultural Awakening

Kristy was born in St. Catharine's, Ontario, and spent her early years moving between various small towns before settling in Sudbury for the past 11 years. Her upbringing was marked by a mix of urban and rural experiences, living with her grandparents and later her mother. Like many Indigenous people, Kristy’s early childhood was influenced by the residential school era, which impacted her family's ability to practice their culture and speak their language.

It was only after moving north with her mother that she began to understand and embrace her Indigenous identity. This transition marked the beginning of her journey to reconnect with her roots.

Embracing Indigenous Culture

Kristy’s cultural awakening led her to become a traditional women's fancy dancer, participating in powwows and cultural demonstrations for over 20 years. Her involvement in these events has been a source of pride and community connection. One of her standout experiences was being part of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, where she was one of 300 Indigenous people welcoming athletes—a moment she describes as "pretty awesome."

Beyond dancing, Kristy is also a skilled beader and crafter, creating intricate beadwork and regalia. She shares her creations on Instagram, where her custom-made pieces reflect her dedication to preserving and promoting Indigenous arts.

Professional Journey and Community Impact

Kristy's professional journey is as inspiring as her cultural one. After gaining extensive experience in electrical engineering and automation, she transitioned to working in renewable energy. Her current role at Mitigokaa Development Corp involves community engagement and project development, focusing on sustainable energy solutions for First Nation communities.

One of her notable projects involves shifting communities from diesel power to biomass power generation. This innovative approach uses waste wood to create electricity, providing a cleaner, more sustainable energy source. Kristy’s goal is not only to address environmental issues but also to create job opportunities and economic benefits within the communities.

Overcoming Challenges and Looking Ahead

Throughout her journey, Kristy has faced numerous challenges but has always maintained a positive outlook. Believing that there's always a way to overcome obstacles. Her determination and confidence have been crucial in her efforts to bring positive change to her community.

Kristy's story is a powerful reminder of the importance of cultural reclamation and community empowerment. Her dedication to preserving her heritage, teaching the next generation, and developing sustainable energy solutions showcases the profound impact one person can have.

Kristy Corby's journey, as featured in Edge Factor's Renewing Roots, highlights the intersection of personal growth, cultural reclamation, and professional achievement. Her story is an inspiration for anyone looking to reconnect with their roots and make a meaningful difference in their community. Through her work and dedication, Kristy is not only renewing her own roots but also helping to strengthen the cultural and economic foundations of her community for generations to come.
