MLITSD announces new FAST program to accelerate students journey into the trades

The recent announcement of the accelerated apprenticeship program is set to revolutionize how students enter the workforce, and Edge Factor was privileged to witness this groundbreaking event firsthand.

Edge Factor had the honor of being invited to the Skills Council of Canada (SCC) event, where the exciting Skilled Development Fund (SDF) project was unveiled at Judith Nyman Secondary School. As partners of the Skills Council of Canada, Edge Factor was invited due to our longstanding collaboration, which includes showcasing educational pathways into the trades through our filmed projects with Judith Nyman Secondary School.

The event, was honored by the presence of distinguished guests such as Hon. David Piccini, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development, Patrice Barnes, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development, and Hon. Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education, was nothing short of momentous. Minister Lecce took the stage to announce the new FAST (Focused Apprenticeship Training) program, designed to empower students in Grades 11 and 12 to delve deeper into apprenticeship learning while completing high school.

According to Minister Lecce, the FAST program enables students to undertake up to 80% of their senior courses in cooperative education, providing invaluable hands-on experience and preparing them for successful careers in the trades.

Congratulations to our partners at SCC for their SDF project and working with the ministry to create such an awesome event. Larissa Hofman, Vice President of Edge Factor, expressed her enthusiasm for the province's commitment to empowering students in their apprenticeship journey, stating, "We are excited that the province continues to prioritize celebrating and empowering students in their apprenticeship journey, and in launching successful careers in the trades."

The FAST program signifies a pivotal shift in how we approach skilled trades education. With initiatives like FAST and the collaborative efforts of organizations like Edge Factor and the Skills Council of Canada, the future looks brighter than ever for aspiring tradespeople.

Apprenticeships and skilled trades play a crucial role in our economy, with over 1.3 million individuals employed in various trade professions across Canada. In Ontario alone, the Skilled Trades Strategy has made significant investments, totaling a staggering $1.5 billion since 2020. These investments not only create job opportunities but also contribute to economic growth and innovation. By fostering a skilled workforce through apprenticeship programs, we ensure that industries thrive, communities prosper, and individuals have fulfilling, sustainable careers.
