Bluewater District School Board Empowers Students with access to Edge Factor Career Exploration tools

Ontario (May 4, 2022) - In Bruce County and Grey County, educators from the Bluewater District School Board are on a mission “to provide a quality education for every student in a safe, accepting, and caring environment.” Part of accomplishing their mission includes providing students with access to high-quality career development tools that raise awareness of opportunities and move them forward in their training and career pathway.

Edge Factor’s mission is to empower learners of all ages to map their career journey and plug into local opportunities. Whether they are in the classroom, at an event, or at home, every student and educator in the Bluewater School District can log in to Edge Factor’s online platform through D2L | Brightspace and/or Google to access thousands of career development videos and gamified activities!

Located on the traditional land of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, which is represented by the communities of Saugeen First Nation and Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation, the Bluewater District School Board currently serves approx. 17,400 students. All of their 40 elementary schools and 9 secondary schools across Bruce and Grey counties have premium Edge Factor memberships, which means they can access thousands of videos, interactive activities, and educational lesson plans.

The goal is to take students on a journey from “I have no idea what I want to do with my life!” all the way to, “I’ve browsed the options, I’ve made informed decisions, and I’ve successfully launched a training and career pathway!Edge Factor calls this experience: the Career Journey. All of the content and features included in a premium Edge Factor membership move people forward in their Career Journey through 4 key phases: Inspiration, Exploration, Preparation, and Connection.

  • Inspiration is all about helping students get excited about their future and using the power of storytelling to open up students' eyes to new possibilities. Edge Factor creates award-winning films, short stories, and documentaries that showcase teams of people working together to impact the world.

  • In the Exploration phase, students dig deeper to explore what it's like to work in diverse industries and careers. Exploration includes Industry Overviews, hundreds of Career Profiles that showcase what a "day in the life" looks like in specific careers, virtual walk-and-talk tours in companies and schools, and more!

  • The Preparation phase is all about helping students prepare for future success with transferable and technical skills! We have videos, lesson plans, and assignable activities that teach students about Soft Skills, Financial Literacy, skills & processes, tools & equipment, and how Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) come alive in real-world careers.

  • Connection is all about helping students connect to local training and career opportunities. Edge Factor's Directory is a great tool for students and parents to browse local Schools, Training Programs, Companies, and Careers: edgefactor.com/Directory

Students and educators can log in anywhere, at any time, on any device, with unlimited access to Edge Factor’s online platform and support services. This makes Edge Factor a great tool for Bluewater School District educators to use during in-person classroom environments and as a virtual or hybrid learning resource!

“Edge Factor has provided our students with an inside look into many fascinating careers that exist right here in our local communities. The online materials are engaging and captivate the interest of students. This tool is helping our students to learn today and lead tomorrow.” - Keith Lefebvre, Superintendent of Education, Bluewater DSB.
