Resume and Cover Letter Tips to Help You Land the Interview

Written by Edge Factor Team | May 9, 2025 at 12:45 PM

Crafting a strong resume and cover letter is more than just a step in the job application process — it's your first chance to connect with an employer and show them why you belong on their team. For many job seekers, this can be overwhelming. What should you say? How long should it be? And how do you make your application stand out from the rest?

Your resume and cover letter are personal marketing tools. Done right, they show who you are, what you bring to the table, and why you're excited about the opportunity. Done poorly, they end up in the “no” pile, or worse, may never get read at all.

Let’s break down some key ways to strengthen these tools and increase your chances of landing that interview.

Why It Matters

Employers often receive dozens, if not hundreds, of applications for a single job posting. A well-written resume and cover letter can immediately set you apart. It's not about having the most experience, it’s about showing that you understand the company, care about the role, and can bring value to the team. This means taking the time to tailor your documents and communicate clearly.

How to Write a Resume That Gets Noticed

Hiring managers often scan resumes in under 10 seconds. These tips can help yours stand out, for the right reasons.

  • Use clear formatting
Choose a clean, professional font. Avoid fancy designs or colors that can confuse applicant tracking systems (ATS) or make your resume hard to read. Use bullet points, bold headings, and white space to keep it organized.

  • Tailor your resume to the job
Read the job description closely and match your skills and experience to the role. Use the same language the employer uses. This shows that you understand their needs and that you’re serious about the opportunity.

  • Quantify your achievements
Don’t just list tasks—show results. “Managed a team” becomes more powerful as “Managed a team of 5 to complete a project ahead of schedule, increasing client satisfaction by 20%.”

  • Include only relevant sections
Focus on what matters: education, experience, and skills. Optional sections like projects or volunteer work should directly support the role you're applying for. If it doesn’t connect, leave it out.

  • Check it, and check it again
Typos, incorrect contact info, or unclear grammar can ruin an otherwise strong resume. Proofread carefully.

Writing a Cover Letter That Adds Value

Some applicants skip the cover letter. That’s a mistake. A well-written one shows personality, professionalism, and preparation, especially when the content is short and specific.

  • Address the hiring manager by name
“To Whom It May Concern” is a red flag. Do a little research. Look for the hiring manager’s name on the company website or LinkedIn. If you can’t find it, call and ask.

  • Clearly state your intent and fit
Open with the role you're applying for and why you're a great candidate. Highlight relevant experience and achievements. Be direct and confident.

  • Show enthusiasm and cultural alignment
Talk about why you're excited about the company. Mention a recent project, their mission, or something you admire. Show how your values align with theirs.

  • Keep it short
No walls of text. Aim for half a page or less. Make it easy to read and to the point.
